Paloma Valencia es precandidata por el Centro Democrático y aspira a ganar la encuesta que ese partido va a hacer en diciembre, en la que se va a elegir al candidato presidencial. Es, a la vez, nieta de Guillermo León Valencia, presidente conservador que gobernó a Colombia entre 1962 y 1966, y nieta de Mario Laserna, el fundador de la Universidad de los Andes, la primera universidad privada que se hizo pensando en las ideas liberales y que no tenía ninguna relación con la Iglesia. Como senadora, Paloma ha sido reconocida como una de las mejores por el panel de líderes de opinión de Cifras y Conceptos. A pesar de ser de derecha, ha votado en ocasiones con el gobierno y, a diferencia de otros precandidatos del Centro Democrático, su discurso no llama a la estigmatización ni al odio, sino a la confrontación de las ideas. Es un ave rara, así sea de derecha.
