60 años de Profamilia: Baja en índice de natalidad, derechos sexuales de la mujer y otras victorias

Una de las nuevas realidades que deberían ser noticia en Colombia es el descenso de la natalidad, un fenómeno histórico que ha llevado la tasa de fecundidad a 1.6 hijos por mujer en 2024, la cifra más baja en los últimos 10 años. Esta caída responde a múltiples factores: por un lado, el aumento en la educación y la participación de las mujeres en el mercado laboral, y por otro, el avance en la autonomía femenina sobre sus cuerpos, impulsada por luchas sociales que han reivindicado los derechos sexuales y reproductivos. Hoy, muchas mujeres eligen no tener hijos y otras acceden al aborto legal, una posibilidad que también hace parte de sus derechos en Colombia. Sin embargo, esta transformación no es nueva, sino que tiene raíces en procesos de largo aliento, como el impulso a la planificación familiar que comenzó hace décadas, cuando hablar del tema era casi un tabú. En ese contexto nació Profamilia, hace 60 años, una organización que permitió —y aún permite— que las mujeres, especialmente las de menos recursos, accedan a métodos anticonceptivos y puedan decidir, junto a sus parejas, cuántos hijos tener… o no tener.
