Sin ventilación, sin poder distinguir cuándo era de día y cuándo de noche, los secuestradores accedieron a facilitarle un receptor de televisión cuando se acordó la entrega de los 100 millones de pesetas que exigían como rescate. El pago debía realizarse en una cuenta corriente de un banco suizo, lo que presuntamente garantizaba el anonimato de su titular.
Una brillante operación policial y judicial, en coordinación con las autoridades helvéticas, permitió detener a uno de los secuestradores, quien no tardó en confesar el paradero del pichichi azulgrana, lo que permitió su inmediata liberación.
Trasladado a Barcelona, en plena madrugada, una manifestación espontánea de centenares de aficionados barcelonistas le dio la bienvenida en las dependencias de la Jefatura Superior de Policía en la Via Laietana.
El jugador, abrumado ante la multitud, dijo perdonar a sus secuestradores y manifestó su deseo de jugar cuanto antes. Aquella temporada ganaría el Pichichi y la Copa del Rey.
