Este reportaje analiza el que es, sin duda, el gran fenómeno turístico de nuestro país. El Camino de Santiago batirá récord, este año, con medio millón de visitantes, unas cifras desorbitantes que tienen su cara A, pero también su cara B. Historiadores reconocidos hablan de cómo se ha desvirtuado el Camino, tanto que ahora el peregrino tipo da paso al llamado “turigrino”. Un turista que ni carga con la mochila, ni duerme en albergues. Este nuevo modelo ha generado muchos negocios. Desde empresas de recogidas de maletas, hasta un incremento exponencial en el número de hoteles. En Sarria, un pequeño municipio de Lugo, acaban de aprobar la construcción de 5 nuevos hoteles.
El Camino de Santiago ya no es lo que era. La ruta milenaria que antaño recorrían penitentes con capa y bordón se ha transformado en un fenómeno turístico global. En este episodio, Equipo de Investigación sigue las huellas de miles de caminantes que cada año se convierten en protagonistas de un negocio que mueve millones. Alojamientos a medida, traslados de maletas, autobuses de apoyo, packs organizados y hasta reality shows: el espíritu de la peregrinación tradicional convive hoy con un modelo de consumo rápido y rentable.
Glória Serra y su equipo retratan con precisión cómo ha mutado la experiencia del peregrino. De Sarria a Santiago, más de 500.000 personas llegarán al Obradoiro este año, muchas sin mochila ni ampollas, pero con reserva en hotel y equipaje transportado por empresas privadas. La industria del camino florece en cada etapa: hoteles boutique, restaurantes temáticos, tiendas especializadas y hasta tatuadores que graban la concha compostelana en la piel de quienes cruzan la meta.
Pero no todo es devoción ni prosperidad. El programa denuncia también la picaresca que crece al abrigo de la fiebre jacobea: señales manipuladas para desviar peregrinos a ciertos albergues, caminos no oficiales maquillados como históricos, y pueblos en decadencia que sueñan con ser parte del trazado para sobrevivir. Al mismo tiempo, los vecinos de Santiago denuncian una masificación insoportable, con colas, cánticos, ruido y vandalismo que convierten su ciudad en una especie de Disneylandia espiritual.
'El Camino' es una radiografía tan documentada como crítica de uno de los mayores fenómenos turísticos del país. Un viaje que va más allá de la fe o el esfuerzo físico y que revela los contrastes entre la experiencia espiritual y la explotación económica.
