¿Qué pasaría si pudiéramos construir una célula viva completamente desde cero, utilizando únicamente componentes químicos que por sí mismos no están vivos? Ahora, un equipo de investigadores de la University of Minnesota ha dado un paso extraordinario en esa dirección con SpudCell, una célula sintética diseñada para reproducir un ciclo de vida completo.En este video exploramos este avance en biología sintética, ingeniería biológica y origen de la vida, y explicamos qué significa realmente construir una célula a partir de componentes no vivos. SpudCell no solamente puede crecer y utilizar recursos del ambiente: también puede replicar su genoma, alimentarse, dividirse y producir nuevas células. Es decir, los investigadores lograron reproducir químicamente un conjunto de comportamientos que normalmente asociamos exclusivamente con los organismos vivos.Uno de los aspectos más fascinantes del experimento es que SpudCell puede dividirse sin utilizar un citoesqueleto, la estructura interna que utilizan las células naturales para organizarse y llevar a cabo la división celular. En su lugar, los investigadores diseñaron un mecanismo en el que proteínas se acumulan en la superficie de la membrana hasta generar suficiente tensión mecánica para provocar que la célula se divida.
