Ingeniero de formación y con experiencia en grandes compañías tecnológicas y en el desarrollo de instrumentación médica, Segurola comenzó su búsqueda después de sufrir problemas de salud desde la infancia y comprobar durante años que los tratamientos que recibía aliviaban síntomas sin resolver las causas. Su experiencia le llevó a abordar el organismo con una mentalidad de ingeniero: intentar comprender los mecanismos que provocaban los problemas en lugar de limitarse a combatir sus manifestaciones. Elena analiza la tesis central del libro: la salud depende en gran medida del estado del “terreno” del organismo, y no únicamente de los agentes externos a los que estamos expuestos. Desde esta perspectiva, se revisa también el papel de determinados síntomas, como la fiebre, y el concepto de “crisis de sanación” defendido por el autor. El programa recorre además la conexión que Segurola establece entre prácticas tradicionales y conocimientos científicos modernos. El ayuno, los alimentos fermentados, la exposición al sol, el movimiento, el frío, los ritmos naturales de descanso y las observaciones realizadas por Weston Price sobre las dietas tradicionales sirven para plantear hasta qué punto determinados hábitos ancestrales encuentran hoy explicaciones en la ciencia. Entre las cuestiones prácticas abordadas aparecen el magnesio y el calcio, la hidratación, la forma y los horarios de las comidas, el consumo de fruta, los aceites, el ayuno, determinados aminoácidos, la exposición solar, el ejercicio y los estiramientos. Una parte especialmente importante está dedicada al sueño y los ritmos circadianos. Elena repasa las investigaciones citadas en el libro sobre la importancia de mantener horarios regulares, los efectos de la privación de sueño sobre el organismo y algunas medidas para favorecer el descanso: recibir luz natural por la mañana, reducir la luz azul por la noche, mantener una temperatura adecuada en el dormitorio, realizar actividad física durante el día y preparar al cerebro para el descanso antes de acostarse. El libro entra también en terrenos más controvertidos, examinando sustancias y tratamientos que, según el autor, han recibido escasa atención pese a contar con literatura científica, así como cuestiones relacionadas con el DMSO, el Alzheimer, los antidepresivos, el flúor, el boro y la historia del gamma-hidroxibutirato. Finalmente, Segurola plantea una crítica al modelo económico de la medicina moderna: un sistema que, en su opinión, puede generar mayores incentivos para mantener tratamientos crónicos que para desarrollar soluciones definitivas. Elena subraya, sin embargo, que el autor no responsabiliza individualmente a los médicos, sino que cuestiona los incentivos y la estructura del propio sistema. Por encima de todas sus conclusiones, El arte de vivir en equilibrio propone una idea fundamental: no creer ciegamente, sino comprobar. El autor incluye las fuentes de sus afirmaciones para que cada lector pueda examinarlas, contrastarlas y decidir por sí mismo.
