¿Te has mirado al espejo alguna vez y pensado «cómo he acabado yo aquí»? No estás mal del todo, pero tampoco estás donde te imaginabas estar. Arnold Schwarzenegger tiene un nombre para lo que falta: foto. Una foto clara de a dónde quieres llegar. Dale al play y te cuento las siete herramientas que él lleva sesenta años usando.
La visión: una foto que mide tus decisionesArnold tenía diez años, vivía en un pueblo pequeño de Austria y de repente le estaba entrando América por los ojos. No sabía qué iba a hacer allí, pero tenía clarísimo dónde quería estar. Visión amplia, borrosa. Pero era una foto, y esa foto le servía para una sola cosa: medir. ¿Esta decisión me acerca o me aleja? Sin foto, cualquier camino te sirve. Y ese es justo el problema.
La mayoría de la gente que se siente perdida no eligió nada, dice. La vida simplemente les pasó por encima. Y tienen razón, en parte: no elegimos de dónde venimos. Pero casi todo lo demás son elecciones nuestras. Lo que no teníamos era una vara de medir. Eso es lo que te da la visión. Escribe en una frase cuál es la tuya. Pon al lado una decisión pendiente. Pregúntate si te acerca o te aleja.
Pensar en grande: trae la solución, no el ruegoEn 1987, todos le decían que ya había llegado. Estrella de acción, nombre en letras enormes sobre el título. Él quería ser primer actor. Decidió hacer comedia. Sus agentes, directores y amigos tenían argumentos de peso para decirle que no. No lo hacían por envidia: pensaban en pequeño. Pensar en grande casi nunca es ir contra tus enemigos. Es atreverte a llevarle la contraria a la gente que te quiere. Por eso cuesta tanto.
La jugada no fue discutir ni rogar. Fue crear la solución: guión listo, equipo montado, y renunciar a su sueldo junto a Danny DeVito e Ivan Reitman para quitarle el riesgo al estudio. Universal aceptó. Los Gemelos recaudó más de cien millones en taquilla y sigue siendo, gracias a ese porcentaje de beneficios, la película con la que más dinero ha ganado en toda su carrera. Si quieres un sí grande, no pidas favores. Haz que decir que sí sea la opción más fácil y más segura para el otro.
Trabajar como un animalCinco horas de entrenamiento al día durante quince años. Esas mismas cinco horas convertidas después en clases de interpretación, dicción e inglés. Para Terminator 2 practicó el giro de recarga de la escopeta hasta abrirse los nudillos. Para dos segundos en pantalla, una sola vez. Cuando llegó a la política, se estudió informes sobre temas de los que jamás imaginó tener que ocuparse.
El propósito no era sufrir. Era estar preparado para cuando llegaran los focos. Las oportunidades llegan para casi todos, antes o después. La diferencia es quién está listo cuando aparecen. Eso no se improvisa el día que toca. Se construye en los meses aburridos, cuando no te mira nadie y nadie te aplaude. El trabajo funciona el 100% de las veces para el 100% de las cosas que merecen la pena.
Vender, cambiar de marcha y devolverVender es educar, no presumir. Cuando Arnold llegó a América, los culturistas se negaban a hablar con los periodistas porque los consideraban el enemigo. Él lo vio al revés: si los medios no cuentan bien el deporte, es porque nadie se lo ha contado. Si tú no llenas el espacio con tu versión, alguien lo llenará con la suya. Y casi nunca va a ser lo que tú quieres. Es la misma idea que recorre todos los libros de mentalidad: primero tienes que ser útil para el otro.
Sobre las quejas, la regla es tajante: no te quejes de una situación a menos que estés dispuesto a hacer algo para mejorarla. La queja da alivio en el momento, pero te deja exactamente en el mismo sitio. Mientras te quejas, tu cabeza mastica el problema, no busca la solución. Cambia esa energía por el primer paso concreto.
Y cuando llegues: rompe el espejo. Mira por la ventana. Busca a alguien que vaya un par de pasos por detrás de ti en tu mismo camino y ayúdale con algo concreto. El que solo se mira al espejo se cansa de verse. El que de vez en cuando mira por la ventana es el que perdura. Eso es lo que el padre de Arnold quería decirle con dos palabras: sé útil.
La decisión que tienes delante es simple: escribe tu foto en una frase. Una sola. Y ponla donde la veas cada vez que tengas que elegir.
