El Lejano Oeste fue español: la historia que Estados Unidos nunca contó

Antes de que los cowboys recorrieran las llanuras o Hollywood creara su mito del Lejano Oeste, ya había hombres cabalgando por el desierto norteamericano bajo la bandera de España.
Se les conocía como los dragones de cuera, soldados de élite enviados a proteger las fronteras de la Nueva España.
Cubiertos con gruesas chaquetas de cuero endurecido —de ahí su nombre—, estos jinetes atravesaron los territorios más hostiles del continente: Sonora, Nuevo México, Arizona y California.
Su misión era proteger a los colonos, abrir rutas y fundar asentamientos donde hoy se levantan ciudades como San Francisco, Tucson o Los Ángeles.
Y al frente de muchos de ellos estaba Juan Bautista de Anza, un capitán nacido en el actual México que lideró una de las expediciones más audaces de la historia americana: cruzar el desierto de Sonora hasta el Pacífico con familias enteras, animales y suministros para fundar una nueva civilización.
Gracias a ellos, la presencia española moldeó el norte de América más de un siglo antes de que nacieran los Estados Unidos.
Sin su labor, el mapa político y cultural del continente sería completamente distinto.Pero su historia fue silenciada.
Cuando las potencias del norte escribieron su versión del pasado, los dragones de cuera desaparecieron de los libros.
Sin embargo, las leyendas cuentan que, décadas después, cuando los ejércitos norteamericanos avanzaron sobre el territorio mexicano, viejos guerreros montados a caballo volvieron a cabalgar, con sus cueras curtidas y sus lanzas reluciendo al sol. Algunos, incluso, se unieron a las tribus indias que habían sido sus aliadas, defendiendo una forma de vida que se extinguía ante la expansión del norte.

¿Quiénes fueron los dragones de cuera?Los dragones de cuera eran soldados fronterizos del Imperio español destinados a proteger las fronteras norteñas de la Nueva España durante los siglos XVII y XVIII. Su nombre proviene de las cueras, gruesas armaduras de cuero de alce o bisonte que los protegían de flechas y espinas en el desierto.
¿Qué papel tuvo Juan Bautista de Anza?Juan Bautista de Anza fue un explorador y militar español que lideró en 1775-1776 una de las expediciones más importantes de América: un viaje desde Sonora hasta California para fundar San Francisco. Su travesía permitió consolidar el dominio español en el norte y abrir rutas que serían usadas siglos después.
