Agosto de 1939. Polonia vive su último verano en paz. Las calles de Varsovia están llenas de vida, los cafés rebosan conversaciones y las familias disfrutan del buen tiempo sin imaginar que, a miles de kilómetros, Hitler y Stalin ya han decidido el futuro de su país. En secreto, el pacto Ribbentrop-Mólotov ha sellado su destino: Polonia será partida en dos.
Este episodio reconstruye, día a día, el camino hacia la tragedia. Desde la falsa agresión de la Operación Gleiwitz, la farsa propagandística con la que Hitler justificó la guerra, hasta el primer cañonazo del Schleswig-Holstein en Westerplatte, considerado el inicio oficial de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
También exploramos cómo el ejército alemán pudo multiplicarse de 100.000 a 1,5 millones de soldados en apenas seis años, y cómo las grandes industrias —IG Farben, Krupp, Opel, Messerschmitt, Volkswagen— convirtieron al Reich en una máquina militar moderna y letal, tal y como explican Adam Tooze y Richard Overy.
Polonia resistió con un ejército numeroso pero sin medios modernos, enfrentándose a la Blitzkrieg en múltiples frentes. Y cuando todavía combatía contra la Wehrmacht, llegó el golpe definitivo: el 17 de septiembre de 1939, el Ejército Rojo cruzó la frontera oriental cumpliendo el protocolo secreto del pacto con Hitler.
El resultado fue devastador: un país destruido en cinco semanas, dividido entre dos dictaduras y sometido a políticas de exterminio, deportaciones y represión que anticiparon las “tierras de sangre” descritas por Timothy Snyder. De Varsovia a Brest-Litovsk, de los bombardeos alemanes a las deportaciones soviéticas, Polonia quedó atrapada entre dos imperios que buscaban su aniquilación.
Basado en las obras de Roger Moorhouse, Norman Davies, Timothy Snyder, Adam Tooze y Richard Overy, este episodio narra cómo empezó realmente la Segunda Guerra Mundial: no como un estallido repentino, sino como el resultado de pactos secretos, propaganda, ambiciones imperiales y la vulnerabilidad de un país atrapado en el centro de Europa.
