En junio de 1983, una chica de 15 años salió de su casa en el Vaticano para ir a clase de música y nunca volvió. Se llamaba Emanuela Orlandi, era hija de un empleado de la Santa Sede y vivía dentro de los muros vaticanos. Ese mismo año desapareció también otra chica en Roma, Mirella Gregori, en circunstancias muy similares. Cuarenta años después, ninguno de los dos casos tiene una respuesta oficial. Lo que convierte el caso Orlandi en algo único es el contexto en el que ocurre. Estamos en 1983, dos años después de que Juan Pablo II sobreviviera al intento de acabar con su vida en la Plaza de San Pedro. Mehmet Ali Ağca, que cumplía condena en una cárcel italiana, envió un mensaje críptico insinuando que sabía dónde estaba Emanuela y que su liberación dependía de la suya propia. El Vaticano, la logia P2, la Banda della Magliana y los servicios de inteligencia de medio mundo aparecen entrelazados en una historia que parece demasiado retorcida para ser ficción, y que sin embargo es completamente real.
