En este episodio de Noches de Historia nos adentramos en el reinado de Isabel II, una figura clave para entender la España del siglo XIX y el nacimiento del Estado moderno.
Proclamada reina con tan solo tres años tras la muerte de Fernando VII, Isabel heredó no solo una Corona, sino un país dividido, empobrecido y al borde del colapso político.
Su llegada al trono desencadenó la Primera Guerra Carlista y abrió un periodo marcado por regencias, pronunciamientos militares, conspiraciones constantes y una inestabilidad crónica.
Durante su minoría de edad, España fue gobernada por generales, camarillas y gobiernos provisionales, mientras la joven reina crecía sin una educación adecuada para ejercer el poder.
Cuando fue declarada mayor de edad con apenas trece años, Isabel II se convirtió en la pieza central de un sistema que gobernaba en su nombre, pero rara vez con su voluntad.
Este episodio recorre los grandes momentos de su reinado: el dominio del Partido Moderado, la Constitución de 1845, la influencia del ejército en la vida política, el matrimonio forzado con Francisco de Asís de Borbón y el deterioro progresivo de la autoridad moral de la Corona.
Analizamos cómo su vida privada fue utilizada como arma política en un contexto profundamente machista, y cómo la reina fue juzgada con un rasero distinto al de cualquier monarca varón de su tiempo.
Pero Isabel II no fue solo escándalo y caos. Mientras la política se consumía en luchas de poder, España se transformaba por dentro.
Bajo su reinado se fundó la Guardia Civil, se reformó la Hacienda pública, se consolidó una administración centralizada y llegó el ferrocarril, conectando un país fragmentado y atrasado.
Madrid recibió agua potable gracias al Canal de Isabel II y el Museo del Prado abrió sus puertas al público, convirtiendo el patrimonio real en patrimonio nacional.
Este episodio también aborda el colapso final del régimen: la crisis económica de 1866, la represión política, el Pacto de Ostende y la Revolución de 1868 que obligó a Isabel II a marchar al exilio.
Desde Francia, la reina asistió al fracaso del Sexenio Democrático y a la Restauración que devolvió el trono a su hijo, Alfonso XII, mientras ella quedaba definitivamente apartada de la historia política de España.
Isabel II fue la heredera del caos, pero también la soberana bajo cuya Corona se levantaron muchas de las estructuras que aún sostienen la España actual. Su reinado dejó un país más moderno en lo material, pero profundamente fracturado en lo político.
Un episodio para entender no solo a una reina, sino a un país en plena transformación.
