¿Qué sabía realmente Pío XII sobre el Holocausto? ¿Por qué el Vaticano guardó silencio ante el nazismo en algunos de los momentos más oscuros de la guerra? ¿Fue el llamado “papa del silencio” un cómplice pasivo, un diplomático prudente o un hombre atrapado entre la neutralidad, el miedo y la supervivencia institucional de la Iglesia?
A lo largo del episodio recorremos el ascenso de Eugenio Pacelli, su elección como papa en 1939, la encíclica contra el racismo y el antisemitismo que nunca llegó a publicarse tras la muerte de Pío XI, el Reichskonkordat con Hitler, la política de neutralidad de la Santa Sede, los informes que llegaron al Vaticano sobre los crímenes nazis y la gran pregunta que sigue abierta: por qué nunca hubo una condena pública y directa del exterminio judío.
También abordamos el otro lado de esta historia: la red clandestina de refugio organizada por instituciones religiosas en Roma ocupada, el papel de conventos, monasterios y parroquias en la protección de miles de judíos, la redada del 16 de octubre de 1943 en el gueto de Roma a escasos metros del Vaticano, las sombras del Banco Vaticano durante la guerra, las finanzas opacas del IOR, el oro procedente de regímenes aliados del nazismo y la polémica de la llamada Ruta de las ratas, que permitió la huida de criminales nazis tras el final del conflicto.
