
#288 El Coliseo | El mártir que desafió a Trajano
Descripción del Episodio
Ignacio de Antioquía (obispo de Antioquía) es recordado como mártir bajo el emperador Trajano (98–117). Lo que se puede decir con más seguridad viene de sus propias cartas (escritas camino al martirio); muchos detalles “novelescos” vienen de relatos posteriores.
Qué ocurrió:
- Detención y condena: Ignacio fue arrestado en Antioquía y condenado “ad bestias” (a morir en un espectáculo público, devorado por fieras), un tipo de pena romana usada para criminales y, en algunos casos, para cristianos.
- Traslado a Roma: En vez de ejecutarlo localmente, fue enviado custodiado por soldados a Roma. En el trayecto pasó por ciudades de Asia Menor (como Esmirna y Tróade), donde recibió visitas de comunidades cristianas.
- Las cartas del camino: Durante ese viaje escribió (según la tradición más aceptada) siete cartas a varias iglesias y a Policarpo. En ellas insiste en la unidad de la Iglesia y, sobre todo, expresa su deseo de no ser “rescatado”: pide a los cristianos de Roma que no impidan su muerte, porque quiere “imitar” a Cristo.
- Martirio en la arena: Ya en Roma, fue ejecutado en un anfiteatro mediante fieras (la tradición suele imaginar leones). La fecha exacta es discutida, pero suele situarse hacia 107–110 d. C. (algunos también proponen un poco más tarde dentro del reinado de Trajano).
- Después: Una tradición antigua afirma que sus restos (huesos) fueron recogidos por cristianos y llevados de vuelta a Antioquía; más tarde, otra tradición dice que acabaron en Roma (vinculados a la basílica de San Clemente).
