Ya en tiempos modernos, recuerda el supuesto apocalipsis maya de 2012 y la presencia constante de catástrofes, invasiones, zombis y colapsos ambientales en la cultura popular. Villegas sostiene que estas visiones pesimistas nacen del temor humano ante un mundo imprevisible y peligroso. Frente a ello, reivindica el progreso científico y tecnológico como evidencia de que, pese a nuestros temores, el futuro podría ser considerablemente mejor que el presente.
