El mundial de fútbol es el espectáculo más grande del mundo. No hay mucho debate, con cerca de 2 mil millones de espectadores en vivo, la final del Mundial es el momento en que el planeta se paraliza en torno a un evento, con un alcance global que solo rivaliza con los Juegos Olímpicos y que deja a otros espectáculos como el Super Bowl o los Premios Oscar muy, pero muy lejos.
En cuanto a alcance e influencia, no hay nada como el Mundial.
Eso solo en números, pero cuando hablamos de un deporte tan enlazado con la vida cotidiana de miles de millones de personas, con sus vidas, culturas y sociedades, un mundial es mucho más que eso; es un reloj vital que nos permite recordar una época, que cristaliza un momento y lo fija en nuestra memoria emotiva como una fotografía que nos lleva a un lugar, un tiempo, unos colores, una música y un diseño determinado.
¿Qué será Norteamérica 2026? No es fácil decirlo porque este mundial viene rodeado de un clima extraño, inquietante.
Un mundial en medio de una guerra, que se juega en un país que parece en guerra contra el mundo, con la FIFA convertida en el perrito faldero de un autócrata, y con el afán de lucro llegando a extremos que hacen preguntarse si no se estará matando a la gallina de los huevos de oro.
Insaciable en su hambre de dólares, la FIFA implementó precios dinámicos que han llevado los costos a niveles absurdos. En Rusia, la categoría más cara de entradas rondaba el millón de pesos, y en Qatar andaba por el millón y medio. Ahora, esa misma categoría subía a 8 millones de pesos. Y con el sistema de precios dinámicos, que varían en función de la demanda, superaron los 30 millones de pesos.
Por una entrada para un partido de fútbol. Conseguir un boleto se ha convertido en pura especulación. Personas que compran para revender, aficionados que esperan hasta última hora para ver si los precios bajan… entre tanta especulación no sabemos si veremos estadios llenos, pero sí que muchos de los hinchas más fanáticos ya han desistido de viajar. Un mundial es ambiente, color, fervor, y la FIFA está poniendo eso en peligro.
Y sobre todo eso está el factor Trump. La FIFA ha hecho el ridículo cortejando al autócrata.
Gianni Infantino, entonces, está jugando el papel de bufón, adulando a Trump, haciéndolo parte de ceremonias que deberían ser solo deportivas y hasta inventándole un ridículo premio de la Paz para compensarlo por el Nobel.
Y para terminar, la guerra, el país organizador, liderado por el Premio FIFA de la Paz, está bombardeando a uno de los países clasificados. Irán va a participar, tendrá su campamento en Tijuana para cruzar a jugar en Los Ángeles y Seattle. Un elemento más que hace difícil concentrarse en la fiesta.
Al final el mundial es reflejo de su época. Una en que los principios de la sana competencia, de una fiesta compartida por todo el planeta, suenan ingenuos o fuera de lugar. Está por verse si el Mundial logra el milagro de causar un paréntesis de deporte, de fiesta y de emoción. O si este Norteamérica 2026 quedará para la historia simplemente como la fotografía opaca de un momento oscuro de nuestro planeta.
