Hoy os presento yt-dlp, una herramienta para descargar vídeos, audios, subtítulos, miniaturas y metadatos de YouTube y otras plataformas.

Pero antes, recordemos que esta semana continúa el curso de SEO/GEO para eCommerce. En la tercera clase definimos el buyer persona y hacemos una investigación de palabras clave orientada a ventas, y en la cuarta trabajamos las cinco bases del SEO/GEO. Así conectamos las búsquedas de los clientes con una estrategia capaz de ganar visibilidad en buscadores y asistentes de inteligencia artificial.

También os recuerdo que el 17 de octubre os espero en Mataró en el Evento de Marketing Online. Falta muy poco para una jornada dedicada al marketing, la inteligencia artificial, el podcasting y todo aquello que ayuda a dar a conocer un proyecto y construir una buena propuesta de valor.

Ahora sí, vamos al lío con yt-dlp, una herramienta de línea de comandos que nació para descargar vídeos de YouTube y que hoy permite hacer muchísimo más. Aunque se utiliza desde el terminal, un agente como Codex puede instalarla, configurarla y convertirla en parte de una automatización sin que tengáis que memorizar sus comandos.

La función más evidente consiste en descargar vídeos, pero también podemos pedir únicamente el audio cuando queremos escucharlo o transcribirlo. Es posible procesar un vídeo concreto, una lista de reproducción e incluso un canal completo, eligiendo en cada caso qué archivos necesito.

Una de las posibilidades más útiles es obtener únicamente los subtítulos. Si el vídeo ya incluye captions, no hace falta descargar el contenido ni volver a transcribirlo. Podemos recuperar el texto directamente y utilizarlo para preparar un resumen, clasificar el tema o incorporarlo a otro flujo de trabajo.

Así funciona una de mis automatizaciones. Cuando alguno de los canales que sigo publica un vídeo, recibo un correo con el enlace, la miniatura, el título y un pequeño resumen creado a partir de los subtítulos. Si queremos profundizar, otro enlace abre la transcripción completa para generar un análisis más extenso.

yt-dlp también puede descargar miniaturas y metadatos como el título, la descripción, el identificador del vídeo, la URL o el nombre de quien lo ha publicado. Toda esa información resulta muy útil para construir una base de datos, organizar contenidos o decidir qué vídeos merecen la pena revisar.

No siempre hace falta descargar el archivo entero. La herramienta permite seleccionar un fragmento, elegir la resolución o quedarse con una calidad ligera cuando el objetivo es hacer una comprobación rápida. Si la conexión se interrumpe, puede reanudar la descarga desde el punto en el que se quedó.

También podemos aplicar filtros por fecha, duración, título o número de visualizaciones. Por ejemplo, podría localizar los vídeos más vistos de varios canales, guardar sus temas y utilizar esa información como punto de partida para un calendario editorial. La idea no es copiar el contenido, sino detectar enfoques, preguntas y tendencias que ayuden a crear algo propio.

Aunque el nombre haga referencia a YouTube, funciona con muchas otras plataformas, entre ellas Vimeo, Twitch, TikTok, X, Instagram, Facebook, Dailymotion, Reddit y SoundCloud. Esto permite preparar procesos parecidos con distintas fuentes sin construir una integración específica para cada una.

La herramienta trabaja junto a FFmpeg para convertir archivos. El audio puede guardarse en formatos como MP3, M4A u Opus, mientras que el vídeo puede prepararse como MP4, MKV, WebM y otros formatos habituales. También se puede limitar la velocidad para evitar que una automatización realice demasiadas peticiones en muy poco tiempo.

Otra función importante es el uso de cookies del navegador. Una cookie de sesión permite que yt-dlp acceda como el usuario que ya ha iniciado sesión y consulte contenido relacionado con su cuenta cuando sea necesario. Para vídeos disponibles únicamente en determinados países, también admite proxies y conexiones a través de servicios VPN.

Además de resumir novedades, se puede utilizar para crear un archivo personal de conocimiento. Podemos guardar los vídeos que hemos visto junto a sus transcripciones y resúmenes, y después buscarlos por significado. Así resulta más fácil recuperar aquel vídeo del que recuerdo la idea, pero no el título exacto ni el canal que lo publicó.

Las posibilidades dependen de cada proyecto. yt-dlp puede alimentar un calendario de contenidos, una base de datos de referencias, un sistema de seguimiento de canales o un segundo cerebro especializado. Basta con decidir qué fuentes interesan, qué información debe extraerse y qué tiene que ocurrir cuando aparece un vídeo nuevo.

En definitiva, yt-dlp convierte los vídeos de internet en material que podemos descargar, filtrar, transformar y automatizar. Con la ayuda de un agente, una herramienta que antes parecía reservada a quienes dominaban el terminal queda al alcance de cualquiera que tenga un uso concreto en mente.
