Pero en esta obra, nos trasladamos hasta mediados del siglo XIX, en Bagnell Terrace, un bonito y tranquilo barrio de Inglaterra, Sally, nuestra protagonista lleva diez años viviendo allí, como todos aquellos que han sido lo suficientemente afortunados para asegurarse un lugar en esta calle, estaba convencida de que en cuanto a comodidad, conveniencia y tranquilidad no tenía rival ni a lo largo ni a lo ancho de Londres. Se trataba de una urbanización cerrada, donde ni siquiera debía soportar el ruido del tráfico.
Pero, aunque estaba más que satisfecha de encontrarse en Bagnell Terrace y no en cualquier otro lugar, aún no había conseguido, y empezaba a temerse que jamás conseguiría, la casa que ambicionaba sobre cualquier otra. Estaba al final de la calle, junto al muro que la delimitaba, y se diferenciaba en un aspecto de todas las demás, que tan parecidas son entre sí. Esta no tenía jardín; en su lugar, el espacio había sido utilizado para construir una gran habitación cuadrada conectada con la casa por un pasillo cubierto. Las habitaciones de Bagnell Terrace, aunque soleadas y agradables, no eran demasiado grandes, y una habitación espaciosa representaría el toque final que otorgaría la perfección a aquellas deliciosas residencias a la protagonista
Sin embargo, los habitantes de aquel deseable domicilio representaban una especie de misterio para todo el círculo vecinal; aunque todos sabia que un hombre vivía allí (ya que ocasionalmente le habían visto entrar o salir de la casa), nadie le conocía personalmente. Un aspecto curioso era que, aunque todos se lo habían cruzado alguna vez en la calle (en muy pocas ocasiones, eso sí), había una considerable discrepancia sobre la impresión que les había causado a cada uno. Poseía ciertamente unos andares enérgicos, como si aún disfrutase de todo el vigor de la vida; pero mientras Sally creía que se trataba de un hombre joven; Hellen Abbot, que vivía en la casa de al lado, estaba convencida de que, a pesar de su vigor, no sólo era mayor, sino muy mayor además.
Hellen y Sally, amigas y solteras para toda la vida, a menudo discutían sobre él en las erráticas conversaciones que mantenían cuando se dejaba caer por su casa para cenar, o cuando Sally se acercaba a la suya para una partida de ajedrez. No sabían su nombre, de modo que, en virtud de su deseo por su casa, le llamaban Nabot Ambos coincidían en que había algo extraño en él, algo desconcertante y elusivo.
Sally había estado un par de meses en Egipto durante el invierno; la noche siguiente a mi regreso Hellen cenó con ella y, tras la cena, le enseñó todo lo que había comprado en el país africano. Pero, lo más importante para ella, una pequeña estatuilla de una gato, con los ojos de lapislázuli…
