Sáhara Occidental: Cincuenta años de la Marcha Verde y de un referéndum que sigue sin llegar

Han pasado cincuenta años desde aquel 6 de noviembre de 1975 en que Marruecos movilizó a cientos de miles de personas hacia el Sáhara Occidental, entonces administrado por España. Aquel avance civil, conocido como la Marcha Verde, entró en territorio saharaui mientras la administración española se replegaba dejando atrás muertos, familias separadas y una promesa de descolonización que nunca se cumplió.
Los Acuerdos de Madrid sellaron una retirada sin referéndum y abrieron una guerra que dividió tanto el territorio como las vidas: soldados y saharauis que habían sido vecinos dejaron de serlo, familias que huyeron al desierto perdieron el contacto y, medio siglo después, muchas de ellas siguen resistiendo en campamentos de refugiados.
Desde 1991, el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU renueva de manera rutinaria el mandato para organizar el referéndum pendiente. Pero las últimas resoluciones, impulsadas por Estados Unidos y reforzadas por Marruecos, han desplazado la idea de autodeterminación en favor de una “autonomía auténtica” bajo soberanía marroquí.
Medio siglo después, el Sáhara sigue siendo la última colonia de África, la provincia 53, una herida abierta entre España, Marruecos y un pueblo que aún espera decidir su destino.
