El siglo XI fue convulso y apasionante en la Península Ibérica, época de Reconquista, de taifas, de almorávides, del mester de juglaría y la presencia de dos personajes esenciales: el rey Alfonso VI y Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, que protagonizaron batallas y enfrentamientos entre sí. Nuestro invitado, el aviador y escritor Francisco Narla, autor de la novela “El buen vasallo”, nos diferenciará la leyenda de estos personajes (contenida en “El Cantar del Mio Cid”), de los hechos y realidad histórica que acaeció a Rodrigo como alguien que tuvo un destino trágico. ¿Fue un mercenario, un héroe o un mito? ¿Fue desterrado un par de veces por Alfonso VI? ¿No perdió ninguna batalla? Conquista la ciudad de Valencia tras un asedio terrible, tuvo dos hijas (Cristina y María y no Elvira y Sol como dice el Cantar) y un hijo llamado Diego, con su esposa doña Jimena, al cual le convierte en el mejor de sus capitanes y le envío a morir en la batalla de Consuegra. ¿Qué importancia simbólica tuvo su espada Tizona y su caballo Babieca? En definitiva, El Cid ha sido reivindicado tanto por la izquierda como por la derecha española y también por la película de Anthony Mann. Lo que queda de sus restos reposa en la catedral de Burgos desde 1921.
