Saskia Niño de Rivera habla con Ernesto, conocido en su barrio simplemente como Lira, creció en Iztapalapa, donde la delincuencia era parte del paisaje cotidiano. Sus padres trabajaban todo el día en La Merced y llegaban a casa pasadas las 9 o 10 de la noche; él se quedaba con su abuela. A los 7 u 8 años ya andaba solo en la calle. A los 11 empezó a asaltar micros y transeúntes. A los 13, en su primer robo de vehículo, disparó en la pierna a un señor que no quiso bajarse del carro. Le pusieron cargo de tentativa de homicidio y lo enviaron al Tutelar de Menores.

Siguieron tres ingresos al Tutelar antes de cumplir los 18, ser papá a los 15 y una vida adulta sin pausa entre rejas. De adulto extorsionó Oxxos: entraba, ponía el teléfono de su patrón en la mesa, esperaba a que el cajero moviera dinero en la computadora y salía con tickets de 5,000 pesos por visita. Dentro del Reclusorio Oriente, bajo los efectos de pastillas y por encargo, participó en una misión donde apuñalaron a varios hombres en el gimnasio. Uno quedó paralizado de medio cuerpo. Y el delito que le costó 30 años —la sentencia máxima— fue asaltar una combi a las 5 de la madrugada con una nueve milímetros. Entre los pasajeros iba una policía de investigación del distrito.

Hoy Lira tiene 31 años. No ha visto a sus dos hijos desde que entró. Su padre murió a los 72 y no pudo despedirse. Su hermano desapareció cuando intentó poner un punto en territorio ajeno; nunca encontraron su cuerpo. Su mamá todavía pega cartelones buscándolo.

Cuando Saskia le pregunta si volvería a escoger esta vida, Lira no duda: escogería la misma. Cuando le pregunta qué piensa en las noches, responde: "Que estoy mal."
