Como investigador de la llamada 'Hipermodernidad', a este profesor universitario le preocupa el impacto de las nuevas tecnologías en las mentes del siglo XXI: "Debemos tener siempre presente la diferencia entre lo real y lo virtual, para que nuestro 'avatar' virtual no se convierta en el eje de nuestras vidas", afirma. José Carlos Ruiz se apoya en los mitos de la Antigua Grecia para explicar algunos de los procesos sociales del mundo contemporáneo. Para él, es fundamental que los jóvenes asienten un código de valores y nutran "su yo real", antes de acercarse al mundo virtual: "Cada vez que abrimos la pantalla sin criterio, es la pantalla quien nos va configurando el criterio y el pensamiento", sostiene. Crítico con la sociedad contemporánea, asegura que la felicidad del siglo XXI "se ha convertido en un instrumento de tortura" basado en una "check list" marcada por las tendencias. Como antídoto contra todo esto, propone el poder del pensamiento crítico.
José Carlos Ruiz se doctoró en Filosofía Contemporánea con una tesis sobre el 'Hiperindividualismo'. Como investigador, sus intereses se centran en el análisis de la sociedad del siglo XXI y en la aproximación de la filosofía a lo cotidiano. Desde hace diez años, es profesor en la Universidad de Córdoba (España), donde desarrolla dos líneas de investigación: la construcción de la identidad y el pensamiento crítico. Durante 20 años fue profesor de secundaria y bachillerato, por lo que asegura que "la docencia es una artesanía". También es colaborador habitual en prensa y ejerce como asesor filosófico para la Cadena SER, en su espacio «Más Platón y menos WhatsApp». En 2022 recibió la Bandera de Andalucía de las Ciencias Sociales y las Letras. Es autor de varios títulos, entre los que destacan 'El arte de pensar' (2018), 'El arte de pensar para niños (2019)' y 'Filosofía ante el desánimo' (2021). En el año 2025 publicó su primera novela, 'Una mujer educada' (Ed. Destino), en la que los personajes reflexionan sobre temas universales como la sinceridad, la culpa o la soledad; desde un punto de vista filosófico.
