Una botella de plástico puede tardar hasta mil años en descomponerse. Una. Y cada minuto se venden un millón de botellas de plástico en el mundo. Cada minuto, un millón. Unos datos vertiginosos que colisionan con el uso que le damos a este material y que resultan en unos de los mayores problemas medioambientales a los que se enfrenta el ser humano. "Hay una cosa que una civilización inteligente jamás debería hacer con semejante material, con semejante tecnología, y es utilizarla para fabricar cosas diseñadas para convertirse en basura", sentencia el economista Manuel Maqueda.
Licenciado en Económicas por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y en Derecho por la UNED, Maqueda es el primer profesor de Economía Circular y Regenerativa en Harvard. Este experto en contaminación por plásticos es fundador de varias ONG y empresas sociales y también codireector de 'Albatross', un documental que expone la situación de estas aves marina acosada por la ingestión de la basura plástica en el océano Pacífico. En un mundo con sobredosis de información el profesor apuesta por buscar soluciones desde el pensamiento sistémico y advierte de la exponencialidad de los problemas a los que nos enfrentamos. "En principio, parece que no ocurre nada y, de repente, catapún. El cambio climático, la pérdida de biodiversidad… Todas las alteraciones que hay en los ecosistemas son funciones exponenciales", avisa el experto.
Los esfuerzos de Manuel Maqueda se centran en dejar un mundo mejor a las próximas generaciones: "Mi trabajo, en la educación y en las ONG, tiene ese objetivo: ser un buen ancestro y hacer honor a este tiempo tan especial y tan importante que nos ha tocado vivir".
