¿Por qué se dice que la inteligencia es "esclava" de las emociones? ¿Es posible que los neandertales fueran tan inteligentes como el homo sapiens? ¿Qué hay de cierto en las expresiones "tener dos dedos de frente" o "las personas inteligentes son menos felices"? El catedrático de Psicobiología Manuel Martín-Loeches desvela algunos enigmas de la mente humana.
De niño, Manuel Martín-Loeches soñaba con diseñar algún tipo de tecnología que permitiera leer la mente de las personas porque quería resolver los misterios de la cognición humana. Su vocación le llevó a convertirse en catedrático de Psicobiología en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y responsable de la Sección de Neurociencia Cognitiva del Centro Mixto de la Universidad Complutense y del Instituto de Salud Carlos III sobre Evolución y Comportamiento Humanos.
A su tarea como profesor e investigador se suma la divulgación científica, con presencia habitual en prensa, radio y televisión. Su investigación sobre la neurociencia del lenguaje, de las emociones sociales y la cognición le han llevado a profundizar en el estudio de la evolución de la mente humana y a publicar los libros '¿Qué es la actividad cerebral? Técnicas para su estudio', 'La mente del Homo sapiens. El cerebro y la evolución humana' y recientemente 'De qué nos sirve ser tan listos', donde responde a algunas de las grandes preguntas sobre el ser humano. "Aunque tú a un chimpancé le intentes enseñar a hablar, no va a hablar como nosotros. No encontramos ningún chimpancé en las aulas, afortunadamente, sino solo seres humanos, que son los únicos que tienen los genes que les permiten construir un cerebro capaz de ser educado como un ser humano.
¿Los neandertales fueron tan inteligentes como nosotros? Pensamos que sí. La cuestión es que a ellos les falló o les faltó algo que la especie humana actual, la que ha sobrevivido, ha desarrollado bastante bien, que es una cultura, un aprendizaje, una acumulación de conocimientos, que es lo que, al final, ha hecho que realmente seamos más inteligentes de lo que podíamos ser sin todo ese conocimiento acumulado", concluye el autor.
