María Belón: "El sentido de la vida es amar"

Un "monstruo negro", tan alto como un edificio, se alzó ante sus ojos, mientras los turistas y trabajadores del hotel corrían y las palmeras caían a su paso. No sabía que se convertirían en la familia española que sobrevivió al terrible maremoto de Sumatra-Andamán, con más de 280.000 víctimas mortales y cerca de un millón de personas sin hogar.
María Belón disfrutaba con su marido y sus hijos de unas vacaciones paradisíacas en Khao Lak, Tailandia, el 26 de diciembre de 2004, en un día de sol, juegos y lectura tranquila junto a la piscina. Cuando los pájaros comenzaron a volar despavoridos y se empezó a escuchar un ruido atronador supo que algo iba mal.
Su historia fue inmortalizada en la multipremiada película 'Lo imposible', dirigida por J.A. Bayona. A pesar de las heridas físicas y psicológicas que su familia ha ido sobrellevando con el paso del tiempo, María Belón describe aquella experiencia como un "regalo" de la vida. "Hay un momento donde tú tienes que decidir si ese dolor complicado, situaciones que no has vivido nunca, el shock postraumático… Hay un momento, como una "Y" en tu vida, donde dices: "¿Qué hago? ¿Me quedo como víctima? ¿Me victimizo el resto de mi vida? ¿O escojo la otra vía?". No hay medios caminos. Y esta otra vía es decir: "¿Qué hago para aprender lo que la vida me quiere enseñar?".
