En este episodio conversamos con María José, mejor conocida como EMJAY, quien nos comparte su profundo viaje personal y profesional, desde su infancia en Guadalajara hasta convertirse en una artista que sueña con llenar estadios.
EMJAY creció en un entorno familiar donde sus padres hacían todo lo posible por darle una niñez feliz y llena de magia, a pesar de las complicaciones que eventualmente los llevaron al divorcio. Estudió en un colegio católico de monjas, un ambiente conservador en el que pronto descubrió que no encajaba y donde comenzó a cuestionar su entorno. Su adolescencia estuvo fuertemente marcada por la rebeldía, buscando desesperadamente la libertad y forjar su propio camino, lo que la llevó a enfrentar momentos turbulentos, incluyendo ser suspendida, salir de su casa y vivir relaciones tóxicas.
Con un intenso deseo de independencia y una mentalidad orientada al trabajo, MJ comenzó a generar sus propios ingresos desde muy joven vendiendo tareas, rellenando geles antibacteriales y repartiendo volantes. A los 19 años, tomó la decisión de irse a Canadá, donde trabajó durante diez meses en construcción y demolición. Esta experiencia, en la que despertaba a las cinco de la mañana y compartía departamento con otras ocho personas, transformó su perspectiva, le enseñó el valor del esfuerzo y le abrió los ojos a las diversas realidades y luchas de otras culturas.
Al regresar a México y no pasar el examen para estudiar arquitectura, decidió apostarlo todo, vendió su computadora y se mudó a la Ciudad de México con apenas 8,000 pesos. Fue ahí, viviendo con una amiga, donde la música la encontró de manera inesperada. Comenzó escribiendo letras sobre pistas de YouTube en su cuarto, lo que llamó la atención de productores locales. Tras un periodo formativo de dos años en una banda pop respaldada por Warner Music —etapa que ella describe como una capacitación intensiva—, EMJAY lanzó su proyecto como solista.
