En este episodio conversamos con Mónica Mannion, quien nos comparte su profunda y transformadora historia de vida, llena de pérdidas, viajes por el mundo y aprendizajes espirituales que la llevaron a encontrar su refugio y sanación en la cocina.

Mónica creció en la Ciudad de México en un entorno familiar marcado por la agresiva batalla de su madre contra el cáncer durante 20 años. El miedo a verla sufrir la llevó a alejarse de la situación, culminando en un doloroso arrepentimiento tras el fallecimiento de su madre, el cual ocurrió tan solo un mes después de que Mónica se casara.

Este suceso, sumado a su mudanza a Argentina a los 23 años, la sumergió en una fuerte depresión y soledad al encontrarse lejos de su familia. Fue en esa lejanía donde encontró dos grandes salvavidas: un libro sobre la vida y la muerte tibetana le cambió por completo la perspectiva sobre el apego, el ego y la pérdida, introduciéndola al budismo. Al mismo tiempo, comenzó a cocinar empíricamente para sentirse más cerca de México y del recuerdo de su mamá.

Al convertirse en esposa de un expatriado, Mónica vivió en diversos países como Estados Unidos, Sudáfrica, Inglaterra y China. En cada destino descubrió nuevas culturas, exploró distintas corrientes de la yoga y conectó profundamente con otras mujeres a través de la gastronomía, dándose cuenta de que la cocina era un lenguaje universal para compartir miedos, soledad y alegrías.

Su etapa en Asia marcó un parteaguas en su vida. Tras vivir una intensa conexión espiritual frente a una estatua de Buda en China, Mónica fue diagnosticada con cáncer de mama. Ella relata con gran vulnerabilidad su duro proceso de quimioterapias en Hong Kong, la pérdida de su cabello, el momento en el que sintió que no podía más, y cómo logró rendirse ante la enfermedad con el apoyo incondicional de su hermana y su familia. Años más tarde, vivió la hermosa y pacífica despedida de su padre durante la pandemia y atravesó un doloroso divorcio tras 26 años de matrimonio.

En medio de la incertidumbre, y animada por su hija Sofía, Mónica encontró un nuevo camino en TikTok durante el encierro. Lo que comenzó con un video viral organizando su refrigerador, se transformó rápidamente en una comunidad de millones de seguidores atraídos por sus recetas, su paz y su inconfundible voz.

Mónica reflexiona en este espacio sobre la vulnerabilidad, la compasión frente al sufrimiento ajeno, la urgencia de la independencia femenina y cómo el dolor extremo puede transformarse en sabiduría. Una historia que nos enseña que está bien dejar ir, que nada es permanente y que siempre es posible reinventarse.
