Julian Assange: un hombre libre, un mundo más opaco

Julian Assange y el Gobierno de Estados Unidos han llegado a un acuerdo. La justicia norteamericana deja de buscar su extradición y él se declara culpable de haber violado la ley de espionaje. Por el camino, Assange se ha pasado 12 años privado de libertad: primero siete años refugiado en la embajada de Ecuador en Londres, y otros cinco años encarcelado en una prisión de alta seguridad en la misma ciudad. Estados Unidos le acusaba de hasta 18 cargos relacionados con el espionaje, que implican hasta 175 años de cárcel.
En 2010, Assange, a través de su plataforma activista Wikileaks, reveló al mundo algunas de las atrocidades cometidas por el ejército norteamericano en Irak y en Afganistán, así como información reservada que revelaba cómo Estados Unidos vulnera todos los límites con tal de defender sus intereses. Muchas de estas revelaciones se publicaron en coordinación con grandes periódicos de prestigio internacional, que luego le han dejado solo ante el proceso penal que ha pagado por estas filtraciones.
Hablamos con María Ramírez, corresponsal internacional de elDiario.es sobre las claves de este último episodio del caso Assange. Con Sindo Lafuente, colaborador de elDiario.es y adjunto al director del diario El País cuando este periódico publicó las filtraciones de Wikileaks, reflexionamos sobre qué implicó la publicación de estos escándalos y qué precio pagan las personas que se deciden a denunciar públicamente los abusos de poder.
