La mejor cardióloga de España nos explica cómo cuidar mejor nuestro corazón

"Qué tenemos que hacer para cuidar nuestro corazón, como mujer, pero también como hombre, porque todos los hombres tienen una mujer cerca a la que aman". Con este punto de partida, la cardióloga Leticia Fernández-Friera lidera un proyecto de concienciación y divulgación científica, Corazón de Mujer, inspirado en el movimiento americano Go Red for Women, con el objetivo de prevenir la enfermedad cardiovascular en la mujer, que es la primera causa de mortalidad femenina.
La doctora Fernández-Friera, socia fundadora de ATRIA Clinic, especializada en ecocardiografía en el Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School de Boston y en tomografía computarizada cardíaca (TAC) y resonancia magnética cardíaca (Cardio-RM) en el Hospital Mount Sinai de Nueva York, bajo la supervisión del doctor Valentín Fuster, también ha innovado en la divulgación científica, a través del proyecto Wake Up, que intenta concienciar a sus pacientes sobre el riesgo de la aterosclerosis, mediante la imagen vascular que muestran las placas de colesterol en las arterias.
"Nuestra idea surgió cuando nos dimos cuenta, efectivamente, de que las mujeres no cambiaban su estilo de vida, aunque nosotros les dijéramos que tenían que cambiar. Pensamos: «Quizá, si les enseñamos cómo están sus arterias por dentro, si hay placas de colesterol o no, les motive a cambiar su estilo de vida». A través de una fotografía, de una imagen, ver su arteria por dentro, podemos ejercer un mayor impacto", describe la cardióloga. Su compromiso con la salud ha sido reconocido con la máxima acreditación (Nivel III) de la Sociedad Europea de Cardiología en Cardio-RM y TAC cardiaco, además de varios premios de investigación nacional e internacional.
